Sometimes it isn’t a prompt or an idea that shifts your writing.

Sometimes it’s a song.

Not even one you were looking for. Just something you hear, maybe for the first time, and it stays with you a little longer than you expected.

That happened to me recently. A song came on, and I didn’t think much of it at first, but something about it stuck. The tone of it, the feeling underneath it, the way it moved.

Later, when I sat down to write, it was still there. Not in a direct way. I wasn’t writing about the song, but something had shifted.

The pace felt different. The words came out a little quieter, maybe a little heavier.

It made me think about how much what we take in finds its way back out.

Music doesn’t ask for structure. It doesn’t need explanation. It just sits there and lets you feel something, and sometimes that carries over without you even trying.

It doesn’t always change everything.

Sometimes it’s just a small shift. The tone, the direction, the kind of thing you’re willing to write that day.

I’ve started to pay more attention to that.

Because every now and then, something simple like a song ends up opening a different side of your writing.

You can sit there and try to think of something worth writing, and nothing really comes. Not the kind that feels real anyway. Just things that don’t quite hold together.

And then later, when you’re not really thinking about it, something shows up.

It’s not always obvious. Sometimes it’s just a line that doesn’t leave. You go about your day and notice it’s still there, which is usually how you know it matters more than you thought.

I’ve had ideas come back years later. Something I noticed once and didn’t write down. A moment that didn’t seem like much at the time. Then one day it’s there again, a little clearer than it was before.

After I posted it, I kept coming back to it. Not in a big way, just somewhere in the background. It stayed with me longer than I expected.

How often those words don’t make sense right away. They just sort of stay nearby, sometimes for longer than you think they will.

And then one day, without really trying, they start to settle in and feel like they belong there.

The big statement. The perfect line. Something that lands hard the moment it’s read.

But that hasn’t really been my experience with words.

The ones people remember are usually quieter than that.

A sentence someone comes back to years later.
Something small that shows up at the exact moment they need it.
Just a few words that help them see something a little differently than they did the day before.

I’ve always thought writing felt less like standing on a stage and more like something else entirely.

More like a lighthouse somewhere along the shore.

It’s not trying to get anyone’s attention.

It just keeps the light on.

And every now and then, someone out there notices it.
Maybe it helps them find their way for a while.

That’s really enough.

There wasn’t a big moment behind it. I didn’t decide to take a break, and nothing fell apart. I just let a few days pass, and then a few more, and somehow that space widened without me meaning for it to.

It’s easy to stay busy. There’s always something to adjust, something to answer, something to organize. From the outside, it looks productive, and in some ways it is. But it isn’t the same thing.

Writing asks for something different. It asks for stillness, for time that doesn’t feel urgent. And when I don’t give it that time, it doesn’t complain. It simply waits.

I think that’s what I missed, not the act of typing, but the quiet of it. The part where something small begins to surface if I sit there long enough.

So today I did. I didn’t have a grand idea or a finished thought. I just returned to the chair and let the rest follow.

Sometimes momentum isn’t something you chase. Sometimes it’s something you rejoin

What if I had never met you?

I heard that question once from Carrie Bradshaw. It stayed with me longer than I expected.

Not in a way that assumes life would fall apart. Life has a way of continuing, with or without our permission. But in the quieter sense. The way certain people become part of your everyday life until you can no longer remember when they weren’t.

I started thinking about the friends who know my stories without needing the long version. The family who stood beside me during ordinary afternoons that never felt important at the time, but somehow became the ones I remember most. The people who showed up without realizing they were changing anything at all.

Would I still be the same person? Would I notice the same things? Would I laugh at the same moments, or pause at the same memories?

It’s strange to think how much of life is shaped in passing. A conversation you almost didn’t have. A visit you almost didn’t make. A person you almost didn’t meet.

There was no announcement when it happened. No moment that said, this will matter later. And yet it did.

It isn’t really about who we might have been without those people.

It’s realizing how much of who we are exists because they were there.

The house was still quiet. Coffee beside me. The screen stayed blank for a while. Not because there wasn’t anything there, but because writing has its own pace.

It doesn’t always show up right away.

I found myself looking out the window more than at the screen. Watching nothing in particular. Just letting the morning be what it was.

There was a time when that would have made me think I was wasting it. That I should be doing more. Getting somewhere faster.

But writing doesn’t work that way.

It asks you to be still longer than feels comfortable. To wait without knowing exactly what you’re waiting for.

And then, almost without noticing, something shifts. A sentence appears. Then another. Not forced. Just there.

I’ve learned to trust that part of it. To stay long enough for it to arrive.

Most days, that’s enough

I did not set out to write a newsletter.

These stories began long before this page existed. They lived on scraps of paper, in late-night thoughts, and in the quiet moments when something small would bring everything back.

My father, Jim, was a man people remembered. Not because he asked them to. Because of the way he stood in the world. Steady. Certain. Unapologetic in who he was.

After he was gone, I found myself holding onto details I was afraid would disappear if I did not put them somewhere. The sound of his voice when he was sure of something. The way he would watch a film like he was studying it, not just seeing it. The silence he carried when words were not necessary.

I am writing these here so they have somewhere to live outside of me.

Some of these will be stories about Jim. Some will be reflections on the life that came after him. Some will be moments that seemed small at the time but stayed anyway.

I do not know how many there will be.

I only know he was not a man you forget.

And this feels like the right place to keep him.
